LIVER BIOPSY


Abstract
Live biopsies can be obtained by three different means: 1) wedge biopsy during abdominal surgery, 2) forceps biopsy at peritoneoscopy, and 3) percutaneous needle biopsy.
Of these the needle biopsy is generally regarded as the best single available diagnostic method in diseases of liver.
Although development of Menghini technique has the virtue of simplicity, and the risks of liver biopsy have greatly decreased in recent years, an adequate biopsies by needle usually depend on mastering precise and careful instrumental technique. In this way needle biopsy of the liver will become even more popular as a diagnostic tool. In addition a pathologist experienced in interpretation of specimens of. needle biopsies of the liver is essential to successful diagnosis. The clinical evaluation, several rational applications, and complications of the needle biopsy of the liver were generally discussed in this article.
